The story behind the motif
Poster with a unique photograph from Gothenburg in 1936. When the catch of herring was as large as in the picture, not all the fish could fit in the fish halls in Gothenburg's fish harbour. Businesses and fish auctions had to be held outdoors. In the picture we see boxes filled with herring and men in coats and hats participating in the auctions. Herring fishing has long been of great importance to the economy of many countries, not least Sweden.
