The story behind the motif
Poster with a beautiful oil painting of the East Indiaman Finland in a storm on the North Sea. The ship was built in 1761 at Stora Stads wharf in Stockholm and made seven voyages to China for the Swedish East India Company. The painting was created in 1921 by Jacob Hägg for the Jubilee exhibition in Gothenburg in 1923.
The model for the painting was probably a drawing in the book "Capitaine Carl Gustav Ekeberg's East Indian voyage, years 1770 and 1771", published in 1773. In this, Finnish captain Carl Gustaf Ekeberg tells about the ship's journey to Canton (today's Guangzhou) in China, including the terrible storm the ship experienced in January 1770.
Artist: Jacob Hägg | Created: 1921.
