Before Producer Gas
In 1939, filling up suddenly became a matter of national preparedness. After war broke out on 1 September, the Petrol and Oil Board was appointed as early as 6 October, and the following year rationing was tightened until civilian petrol consumption effectively ceased. The image captures everyday life just before the great transformation.
