The story behind the motif
Poster with a portrait of Queen Kristina. The painting was created by Jacob Heinrich Elbfas who was a Swedish court painter, among other things to Queen Dowager Maria Eleonora.
Kristina was the daughter of King Gustav II Adolf and Queen Maria Eleonora . She was Queen of Sweden in her own right from 1632 to 1654, reigning from 1644. During Kristina's reign, large parts of the Thirty Years' War and Torstensson's War were fought and ended. This led to major Swedish conquests and increased prestige.
Queen Kristina took an interest in culture and attracted, among others , René Descartes and Claudius Salmasius to the Swedish court. In 1654 she abdicated and converted to Catholicism, a major scandal of the time, after which she settled in Rome. There she came to play a prominent role in the city's cultural life.
