The story behind the motif
A beautiful drawing with the heraldic coat of arms for the province of Dalsland from the 19th century.
The coat of arms depicts a red bull on a silver shield. The bull is a traditional symbol of agriculture and strength, which is fitting for Dalsland, a landscape known for its rich farmland and rugged nature. Originally, the coat of arms, which was added at Gustav Vasa's funeral in 1560, consisted of an ox. The ox was probably chosen as a symbol of the extensive cattle breeding that occurred in Dalsland at this time.
Dalsland is located in southwestern Sweden, borders Vänern, Sweden's largest lake, and has a long tradition of both agriculture and forestry. The towns in Dalsland are relatively small, with Åmål being the largest and best known. Dalsland in older times (from the middle of the 16th century) bore the title of county, but now, like all the kingdom's provinces, has the dignity of a duchy.
The text above the coat of arms reads: Dalslands Vapen. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."
