From Marshland to Boulevard
By the time the photograph was taken, the street’s older name had already become history. Before 1885, parts of the route were called Stora Träskgatan – a name that lives on in the City Museum’s image archive of the same place. The change to Birger Jarlsgatan formed part of the major redevelopment of Norrmalm and Östermalm at the end of the nineteenth century.

The story behind the motif
