The story behind the motif

An amazingly detailed image of the Avenyn in Gothenburg in 1964. Zoom in to see all the fantastic cars, trams and people in motion. In the background we see Götaplatsen with the concert hall and the Poseidon statue.

The avenue is actually called Kungsportsavenyen - or if you want to be really picky: Kungsportsavenyen . The name Kungsportsavenyen was the original one from the city plan changes on September 5, 1867. After many discussions and reversals in the decisions, about thirty well-known citizens of Gothenburg, tenants and house owners got together and demanded back Kungsportsavenyen as the name of the new avenue when they had discovered that they would be obliged to new cost change of their addresses.

The controversial thing that was the basis of the previous discussion was the designation avenue, which was perceived as foreign with a "foreign feel". The first parts of the avenue were built around 1872 through the Kalmarehus building. P aradgatan was dominated by large exclusive residential buildings, was an elegant and popular promenade that started at Kungsportsbron in the north and ended at Lorensbergs Park in the south. Here, men in tall hats and women in their most beautiful skirts flaunted their Sunday walks. The first store was first opened in 1914, a spice shop at no. 24, Sturefors quarter.
