The story behind the motif
Poster with one of Sweden's all-time best-loved writers: Astrid Lindgren (1907-2002)
Lindgren is known worldwide for his children's books about, among others, Pippi Longstocking (1945), Barnen i Bullerbyn (1947), Karlsson på taket (1955), Madicken (1960), Emil in Lönneberga (1963), The Salt Crow (1964), The Brothers Lionheart (1973) and Ronja Rövardotter (1981).
In 2019, Astrid Lindgren's books had sold 165 million copies and been translated into 107 languages. Many of Lindgren's books have also been made into films
Lindgren has been awarded a large number of prizes both nationally and internationally for his books, including the Swedish Academy's large gold medal. There are also several prestigious prizes in her name, such as the Literature Prize in memory of Astrid Lindgren, which was established in 2002 by the Swedish government. The prize sum is a whopping five million, which makes it the world's second largest prize sum in literature - surpassed only by the Nobel Prize.
