In folklore, trolls often looked like ordinary people. They could actually be beautiful too, although they were often revealed by their tails which often stuck out from under their skirts or through a trouser leg.
It was the artist John Bauer who gave us the image of trolls as ugly with big noses. In the picture, the troll bends over the small farmhouse in the forest and sniffs with his enormously long nose.
