The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Gustav Vasa's entry into Stockholm 1523. Gustav Vasa (1496-1560) led the Swedes' rebellion against the Danish union king and succeeded after receiving help from the Hanseatic League. King Christian had been driven away to Copenhagen and the union between the Nordic kingdoms was dissolved forever.
On Midsummer's Day in 1523, Gustav Vasa, who had been elected king at a Riksdag in Strängnäs, marched into the capital. He is celebrated with pomp and circumstance when he rides into the Palace in Stockholm.
