The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting She often sneaked out in the fog to smell the good smell of John Bauer from 1911.

The picture was published with the fairy tale "Nern trollmor skötten kungens storbyk" by Elsa Beskow in the collection of fairy tales Among Elves and Trolls in 1914. The tale is about a sorceress and her boy who remain in the forest when the other trolls have to move because humans are pushing deeper and deeper in the wilderness. Trollmother and her boy have acquired a taste for fried pork and coffee. Disguising themselves as humans by tying up their tails under their clothes, they can sneak in among humans to get hold of their new favorite food and drink.

In the picture, we see the sorceress sneaking out to a cabin in a dark forest landscape to smell the good smell of food.

Iconic John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling. Curious to know more about trolls? Read more here: The Trolls of Domberget .
