When Vinga Got Twin Lighthouses
The painting is dated 1856 – the year Vinga received a second lighthouse, because seafarers had mistaken the first light for other lighthouses and shipwrecks had followed. The familiar lighthouse tower of today was not built until 1890, so the work belongs to a brief period when the entrance to Gothenburg was marked by two lights.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a beautiful painting painted by the artist Arnold Plagemann in 1856. The grand motif shows ships over a wavy sea and in the background land with the Vinga lighthouse can be seen.

Vinga lighthouse, is a Swedish lighthouse on Vinga island. The current lighthouse was built in 1890, although Vinga has been an important island for sailors long before that. This lighthouse is the third built on the island. It is one of Sweden's most famous lighthouses and a special symbol of the city of Gothenburg.
