The archive reference leads to Mittet & Co, the publisher that spread images of Norway far and wide long before holiday feeds and travel blogs. Founded in 1899, the company published around 50,000 postcards and sent photographers across the country; its extensive negative archive eventually ended up at the National Library in 2007.

The story behind the motif

A skier makes a high jump in Norway around 1978. Then, as now, style points were important on the slopes. The man wears a trendy 70s vest with badges and sunglasses.

Scandinavians undoubtedly have a special relationship and fondness for skiing, with strong traditions that go back a long way.

The world's oldest ski was found in a bog in Västerbotten and is dated to an incredible 3,200 BC. Old documentation from the 5th century has also been found about "Skidfinnar" (Sami) who transported themselves quickly and easily across snow-covered landscapes with the help of skis. They are also depicted on runestones from the Viking Age. The first primitive downhill competition was held in 1850 in Oslo and the sport then spread to the rest of Europe and the USA.
