The poster that made him famous
When the Moulin Rouge opened in 1889, a painting by Toulouse-Lautrec was already hanging by the entrance. Two years later he was commissioned to create his first large advertising poster for the pleasure palace – a six-foot-high lithographic print that made him famous overnight and launched his poster career.

The story behind the motif
This illustration is a Moulin Rouge poster, designed by the French poster artist Toulouse-Lautrec. The poster was created to promote the popular evenings of entertainment held at the Bal du Moulin Rouge.
Moulin Rouge, located at Place Blanche in Paris, is known for its characteristic building with a red moth, which is central to the poster. The illustration captures a woman in a yellow dress riding a horse, referencing the theatrical and lively atmosphere of the cabaret.
The poster was part of Toulouse-Lautrec's work to popularize nightlife in Paris during the late 1800s, particularly the cabaret and dance parties that took place in places like the Moulin Rouge. Lautrec was known for his dramatic and stylized depictions of cities, entertainment and famous cultural sites, and his work has had a lasting influence on poster art and popular culture.
