The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Mount Fuji by Kamisaka Sekka, created in 1909–10 for the series Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, also known as Momoyogusa. Sekka drew inspiration from nature and Japanese literature, bringing the decorative visual language of the older Rinpa tradition into the 20th century.
Fuji appears as a monumental white form against a warm, almost entirely flat background. Dark blue, angular sections at the foot of the mountain create a strong contrast with the soft silhouette. The minimalist composition transforms one of Japan’s most iconic landscapes into a modern and graphic image.
