First as a Serial
The sheet did not begin as a book illustration. When Momoyogusa was published in 1909–10, the prints were first sent out individually to subscribers to the series; later they were issued in bound albums for a wider audience. Sekka also drew closely on models from the Rinpa school, whose visual language was already several centuries old.

The story behind the motif

Poster featuring Cranes by Kamisaka Sekka, created in 1909–10 for the series Flowers of a Hundred Worlds, also known as Momoyogusa. The series consists of nature and literary motifs in which Sekka reconnects with the decorative visual language of the classical Rinpa tradition.

Three white cranes rest behind dense green pine branches. The birds’ black necks, red crowns, and directed beaks gather toward the center of the image, creating an elegant balance. The original is a colour woodblock print with elements of gold and silver, giving the warm background a subtle lustre.

Artist: Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) | Created: 1909–10.
