The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Bullfinch and Weeping Cherry by Katsushika Hokusai, created around 1834. The color woodblock print is part of a series of flowers and birds and shows how Hokusai could unite careful studies of nature with a clean, decorative picture surface.
A bullfinch perches among drooping cherry branches, where the bird’s compact form meets the soft lines of the blossoms. Hokusai is one of Japan’s most influential ukiyo-e artists and, throughout his long career, worked with everything from landscapes and everyday life to animals and plants.
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) | Created: circa 1834.
