The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Acanthus, William Morris’s monumental leaf ornament designed in 1874 and registered for Morris & Co. in 1875. Large acanthus leaves roll and curve through the pattern in a powerful, continuous movement that makes the design both dramatic and exceptionally decorative.
William Morris (1834–1896) was a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement and reacted against the anonymous mass production of the industrialized 19th century. Instead, he sought inspiration in nature, historic craftsmanship, and handmade techniques. Acanthus marks the beginning of a period in which his wallpaper patterns became larger and more confident in scale. Although the design is around 150 years old, the flowing foliage still feels modern and works particularly well as a graphic element in both classic and contemporary interiors.
