The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Valkyrian by the Norwegian artist Peter Nicolai Arbo from 1869.
In Old Norse mythology, valkyries were female beings who chose which warriors on the battlefield would die and which would survive. The Valkyries then brought the dead from the battlefields to the world of the gods, to Odin's Valhalla or Freya's Volkvang.
During the 19th century, interest in Old Norse history and mythology grew in Northern Europe, which became an alternative to classical Greek and Roman.
The Norwegian painter Peter Nicolai Arbo was one of the artists who during the 19th century focused on motifs taken from Old Norse mythology.
