Schiele made this study in the same year that he exhibited his work for the first time, in Klosterneuburg in 1908. The following year, he left Vienna’s Academy of Fine Arts and founded the Neukunstgruppe—a departure from the teaching he found overly restrictive.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration by Egon Schiele. The motif is called Standing Girl, Back View (1908) and shows a girl in a stunning blue coat and beret. She walks away from the viewer with a lovely movement. The original is at The MET Museum in New York. 

Egon Schiele was an artist from Austria. He is counted together with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha as the most significant figurative artist in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.
