Art in the Format of a Postcard
Before it ended up on a wall, the image was a small postcard lithograph: Wiener Werkstätte’s no. 290, printed on card measuring 14 × 9 centimetres. Schiele made only three designs for the influential Viennese workshop—an attempt to let modern art circulate in everyday life, in the format of the post.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an illustration by Egon Schiele. The motif is called Portrait of a Woman (1910) and the original is at The MET Museum in New York.

Egon Schiele was an artist from Austria. He is counted together with Gustav Klimt and Oskar Kokoscha as the most significant figurative artist in Vienna at the beginning of the 20th century.

The twisted body shapes and expressive lines that characterize Schiele's paintings show an early form of expressionism.

Illustrator: Egon Schiele | Created: 1910.
