From Novel to Lithograph
In 1902, the image formed part of Auguste Rodin’s suite for Octave Mirbeau’s erotic novel Le Jardin des supplices. The printer Auguste Clot transferred Rodin’s drawing into colour lithography, and in the deluxe edition each sheet was placed in a protective wrapper bearing its own line from the book.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a vintage nude illustration by none other than the famous sculptor Auguste Rodin (1840-1917). The motif is called Caresse: moi danc, chéri, French for Smeka: I dance, darling. The original is at the Cleveland Museum of Art.

Auguste Rodin was a French sculptor, draftsman and photographer . He is widely regarded as the father of modern sculpture. Rodin's The Thinker is one of his most famous sculptures.
