The story behind the motif

The picture shows a Swedish pilot about to get into a Spitfire, a fighter plane from the Second World War.

The Swedish Air Force purchased 50 aircraft in 1948 to be used for reconnaissance purposes. One of the most famous aircraft ever produced, the model is a British fighter designed by Reginald Joseph Mitchell in the 1930s.

The plane is mainly known for its action during the Battle of Britain and was one of the most important fighter aircraft of the war. The British Spitfire struck fear into German pilots as the fighter combined speed and power with superb maneuverability. Top speed was 594 km/h.
