The Hunting Companion as Model
When Liljefors painted this work in 1894, he had a friend he often hunted with pose for it. He also used photographs as aids – a common method at the time that shows how his carefully observed nature painting was also developed in the studio.

The story behind the motif

This poster shows Bruno Liljefors' famous painting Sniper from the year 1887, a work that is considered one of his most outstanding. The man in the picture holds a rifle and listens intently for sounds in the forest.

During the 1880s, poaching was not uncommon, especially with the increasing demand for game meat and skins as a result of industrialization and urbanization.
