The story behind the motif
Poster with a vintage poster of a pink flamingo . This lovely illustration was drawn by Robert Havell in the 19th century and used in John James Audubon's book Birds of America. In the picture we see, among other things, the text American Flamingo and Phoenicopterus ruber - Latin for the American bird species Caribbean Flamingo. In the upper part of the picture we see sketches of the flamingo's anatomy such as head and leg structure.
Flamingos' pink feathers come from a substance they ingest through food. The strength of the color varies depending on which animal or phytoplankton they ingest. Those who do not get enough of the substance remain grayish like the young birds.
