The story behind the motif

Theodor Kittelsen is a Norwegian artist who, like Swedish John Bauer, is known for his fairy tale motifs with trolls and princesses. His works are still iconic in many Nordic homes today, but despite being hailed as a national artist in Norway, he is barely known outside Scandinavia.
Although the characters portrayed in Nøkken (The Sea Monster), Skogtrollet (The Forest Troll), and Pesta (The Black Death) are over 100 years old, they still resonate as icons in the minds of many Norwegians.
