First Rejected, Then Rediscovered
Peder Balke sold several works through Christiania Kunstforening in the 1840s, but the society’s board later called his paintings “quite worthless”. He drifted out of the official art world and was largely forgotten until the twentieth century – a belated vindication for a style of painting now regarded as exceptionally bold.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting The Glacier from the 1840s by the Norwegian landscape painter Peder Balke. The powerful motif is of Jostedalsbreen , which is Norway's and Europe's largest mainland glacier.

Jostedalsbreen is 487 km² and is located in Jostedalsbreen national park. The glacier is at the top of the mountain between Nordfjorden and Sognefjorden. From it twenty glaciers stretch down into the lowlands and many of them are Norway's most popular tourist destinations. The painting is today part of the Gothenburg City Museum's beautiful collection.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
