A Painting on the Run
Edvard Isto painted his politically charged image in Helsinki in the autumn of 1899, in the wake of the Tsar’s February Manifesto. The risk of confiscation was so serious that the original was taken to Sweden; despite the ban, reproductions were distributed through an agent network to Finns as far away as the United States and Hungary.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the dramatic painting Attack ( Hyökkäys) by Eetu Isto.

This iconic painting is still today a symbol of Finland's struggle for independence and a political resistance painting from the periods of repression in Finland that lasted between 1899–1905 and 1908–1917.

In the painting, a maiden who symbolizes Finland defends herself against the attacking Russian eagle, which e.g seeks to tear the law book out of her hands . This is exactly what happened during the periods of repression, when Russia threatened Finland's autonomy and its own laws. In the painting, we see the coat of arms of Finland on the belt around the maiden's waist.

The work was completed in 1899 in the social climate that followed the February Manifesto and became a symbol of constitutional thinking and a patriotic Finnish spirit. Despite the ban on the painting tens of thousands of copies of it were distributed across the country .
