The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Spring time by Claude Monet from 1872. The subject is of a lovely spring day where a young woman is sitting on the grass reading.
During the early 1870s, Monet often depicted views of his garden that included his wife Camille and their son Jean. But when this painting was exhibited at the Second Impressionist Exhibition in 1876, it was more commonly called "Woman Reading."
Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris and was, along with Auguste Renoir, one of the main pioneers of Impressionism. Monet's work Impression. Sunrise from 1872 gave name to the movement.
