A Gift to a Collection of Gifts
In 1836, the painting came to the Institut Calvet in Avignon as a gift from Baron de Montfaucon. There it became a late addition to an unusual museum foundation, established in 1810 through the will of the physician and collector Esprit Calvet, with its library, art and curiosities.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the incredibly detailed painting Le paradis terrestre from the 16th century by Hans Bocksberger the Elder (1510–1561). Bocksberger was an artist from Austria who was active during the Renaissance.

The motif depicts a scene from the Old Testament with God, angels, and a rich nature with various plants and animals. In the picture we even see several fantasy animals and 'the first two people' Eve and Adam. Zoom in and see all the amazing details!
