The story behind the motif
Canvas with the painting Barnard Castle by William Turner.
The painting depicts the medieval castle ruins Barnard Castle in northern England, County Durham. Perched on a high cliff above the River Tees, Barnard Castle takes its name from its 12th century founder, Bernard de Balliol. It was later developed by the Beauchamp family and then passed into the hands of Richard III. The castle was finally abandoned in the 17th century and today lies in ruins, albeit a popular tourist destination.
Turner is best known for his Romantic landscape paintings , the style of which can be said to have laid the foundation for Impressionism. His paintings are among the world's most valued. There is a 2014 movie called Mr. Turner and is a dramatization of the life of the great, if eccentric, British painter.
