The more timeless works with water lilies replaced Monet's earlier more contemporary paintings from the period 1870-1890. The focus of the later subjects was Monet's beloved flower garden and pond with a Japanese bridge.

Claude Monet was born in 1840 in Paris and, together with Auguste Renoir, was one of the main pioneers of Impressionism and was also the one who gave the movement its name through his painting Impression. Sunrise from 1872.

Monet was close friends with another famous artist Eduardo Manet who among other things painted A Parisian Lady . With the help of Manet, Monet, in 1871, got hold of a residence in a suburb of Paris named Argenteuil. After the move, Monet began one of the most productive phases of his career, creating many of his most famous works.
