The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Trellis, William Morris’s first wallpaper design. The motif was drawn as early as 1862 and went into production in 1864. Roses wind through a trellis together with birds, offering a clear example of Morris’s early idea of allowing the walls of the home to feel like an extension of the garden.
The pattern was inspired by the trellised rose in the garden at Red House, Morris’s own home in Kent. The birds were drawn by the architect Philip Webb, who had also designed the house. William Morris (1834–1896) later became a central figure in the Arts and Crafts movement, but already here one can see the combination of nature, rhythm, and decorative repetition that made his patterns so influential. The historic design lends a cosy, enveloping character that still feels surprisingly easy to combine with modern interiors.
