After its merger with the Jönköping Match Factory in the early 20th century, Vulcan in Tidaholm became the world’s largest match factory. Around two million boxes were produced every day, most of them for export – a small everyday commodity that made Swedish industry known far beyond the country’s borders.

The story behind the motif
Poster with antique matchstick label. On match boxes that were produced in Sweden in the past, labels were affixed that showed which match factory and brand made the matches.

The labels were adapted to the market the matches were intended for and as matches were a major Swedish export, matches were distributed all over the world and the motifs varied greatly to suit the clientele.
