The story behind the motif
Poster featuring Rooster, Hen and Chicken with Spiderwort by Katsushika Hokusai, created around 1832. This color woodblock print was produced during Hokusai’s so-called Iitsu period, when he often worked with flowers and birds in smaller, highly detailed compositions.
A rooster, a hen, and a chick stand closely together among blooming Asiatic dayflower, known in Japanese as tsuyukusa. The vivid palette and the birds’ expressive posture make the motif both lively and tender. The image demonstrates Hokusai’s ability to lend everyday scenes of nature a distinct personality.
Artist: Katsushika Hokusai (1760–1849) | Created: circa 1832.
