Neutrality at a Distance
S/S Stockholm was Svenska Amerika Liniens first passenger steamer. When the image was taken during the First World War, she had been painted with neutrality markings – large identifying signs intended to signal Sweden’s neutral position to belligerent vessels. It was the maritime way of making nationality visible from afar.
