From steam to electricity
When the photograph was taken, the original Katarina Lift was still powered by steam. Only in 1915 was the machinery replaced by an electric motor – but the lift itself lasted barely half a century at Slussen: it closed and began to be dismantled in 1933, when the junction was rebuilt.

The story behind the motif

Katarina lift seen from Slussen sometime between 1895-1900 . The Katarina lift is not only a public lift but also Stockholm's most famous lift. The lift and its footbridge between Stadsgården and Mosebacke were built by engineer Knut Lindmark to make it easier for people to get around. The lift was inaugurated in 1883. It cost 5 öre to go up with the lift and 3 öre to go down. See our second picture of the Katarina lift from a different angle and in landscape format here
