In 1876, Grönsakstorget was given an unusually clear role: under a new ordinance, all trade in vegetables, root crops and garden produce within the moat was to be concentrated here. When the photograph was taken in 1912, the site was therefore still the city’s regulated hub for everyday fresh produce.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a unique image of Grönsakstorget in Gothenburg. In the photo, we see women at a fur stand in the spring of 1912.

Grönsakstorget during spring is described with a quote from Göteborgs Aftonblad 13 April 1897:
" Grönsakstorget now presents a spring-like sight during the day, in the many spring products that appear there. The young leaves of the birch are sold by old women and children, and among the flowers are also offered one or two of the first fruits of spring."
