When Najad left Kockums shipyard in 1942, she did so broadside—sideways—instead of through the more usual bow-first launch. The submarine was built to lay mines and belonged to a new Swedish submarine series developed in the middle of the Second World War.

The Swedish submarine Najad was launched in Malmö in 1942. Her motto was Robur et Forma, Swedish translated Strength and Beauty.
