When “af” Was Still “af”
The original title page from 1907 still reads “Saga af Elsa Beskow”. The year before, a spelling reform had begun replacing f with v in words such as “af”, but the older Swedish remained in the printing. The story thus became a small moment of linguistic history amid a period of change.

The story behind the motif

Poster with a magical illustration from Elsa Beskow's saga Olle's ski trip which was published for the first time in 1907. 

Olle has received a pair of skis as a Christmas present and sets out on his first skiing trip in the forest. The picture shows the moment when Olle meets Uncle Rimfrost during his ski trip. In the story takes Uncle Rimfrost with Olle on an adventure through winter's enchanted landscape.

Elsa Beskow (1874-1953) was a Swedish author and illustrator, known for her storybooks for children that combine text and images in a unique way. She wrote and illustrated over 40 books that have become classics in Swedish children's literature. Beskow's stories are often filled with nature romance and Nordic folklore, making them timeless and beloved by generations.
