The story behind the motif
Poster with the painting Vine from 1884 by Carl Larsson (English title: The Vine).
The wine consists of two paintings: this painting of a man drinking wine at a table in France and the other painting where we see a woman harvesting grapes from her garden ( see here ). The works that together make up The Wine can be interpreted as a light allegory of love – the woman harvests the grapes that become the wine the man gets drunk on.
With his great technical skill, Carl Larsson had excellent conditions to succeed in the neo-coco genre, which was largely based on the ability to paint with illusory brilliance. Carl Larsson is one of Sweden's most beloved artists of all time, known for his characteristic watercolors that celebrate an idyllic family life.
