Four Fashion Houses, One Issue
The illustration was one of four special full-page plates in the second issue of La Gazette du Bon Ton in 1923. In the same issue, Worth was placed alongside Paul Poiret, Jeanne Lanvin and Madeleine Vionnet—an unusually concentrated overview of Paris’s leading couture houses at the time, drawn by four of the magazine’s foremost illustrators.

The story behind the motif

This elegant poster reproduces a 1923 illustration from a French fashion magazine, titled "Deux heures de matin. Manteaux," showcasing the exquisite coats by Worth.

Illustrated by the renowned George Barbier, his work is celebrated for dramatically influencing early 20th-century fashion, with accolades from prestigious publications like Vogue.

Originating from the Gazette du Bon Ton, this piece reflects an era when fashion was an art form, and Paris served as the world's stage. This magazine, pivotal for its time, not only featured fashion from leading houses like Cheruit, Doucet, Lanvin, Paquin, Poiret, Redfern, and Worth but also included satires, stories, and critiques, mirroring the lavish lifestyles of high society and their openness to avant-garde trends.
