The story behind the motif
Canvas painting with August Strindberg portrayed by Carl Larsson in 1899.
Carl Larsson has said that he was tormented by the task of portraying Strindberg. After the first day's sitting, however, Strindberg was so satisfied that he exclaimed "A masterpiece, don't touch it anymore". The result was a sketch in charcoal, where only the eyes are colored in blue.
The relationship between Strindberg and Carl Larsson was complicated. IN A new blue book (1908) described Strindberg Larsson as an unreliable and false person. Carl Larsson took the attack very hard and broke contact with Strindberg.
