The date 1772 conceals an older history: Carl David Gyllenborg’s sheet is a copy of a city plan proposal that Johan Eberhard Carlberg submitted to the Police and Fire Commission as early as 9 March 1750. The division by different colours was therefore not merely decorative, but a way of organising Stockholm into city districts.

The story behind the motif

Poster with an old map of Södermalm, Stockholm from the year 1772.

At the top left, we see the text " Charta över Södermalm. Copy of the city's associated charter drawn by the chamberlain Count CD Gyllenborg on July 14, 1772. : The original is a project for the division of Stockholm's city tracts, according to the differences between the ferries, given to the then-existing Royal Police and the fire commission d. 9 martii 1750."
