From Seal to Provincial Symbol
Härjedalen long lacked a coat of arms of its own. After the Treaty of Brömsebro in 1645, the province became Swedish, and the oldest known seal image appears as early as 1647—probably because Härjedalen’s representatives needed a seal at the parliament. Its symbolism preserves the memory of the region’s old bog-iron production and smithing.

The story behind the motif
A beautiful drawing with it heraldic coat of arms for the Härjedalen region from the 19th century.

The coat of arms contains motifs representing blacksmithing and craftsmanship: a hammer, an anvil and tongs. These symbols reflect Härjedalen's historical connection to iron production and metalwork.

The text above the coat of arms reads: Herjeådalen's Coat of Arms. At the bottom left it says: "Sweden's National and Country Coat of Arms. Established by the Royal Majesty. After drawings by Prof. M. AD. Hildebrandt in Berlin. Published by Carl Arvid Klingspor."

Härjedalen is a landscape in Jämtland County in Sweden, known for its sparsely populated nature, mountainous landscape. Funäsdalen, Sverg and Hede are popular urban areas located here.
