When Bauer sought new paths
Fanstyg was created when John Bauer was trying to break free from his role as the obvious illustrator of fairy tales. After 1915, he left his work on Bland tomtar och troll and sought freer forms of expression through, among other things, monumental painting and theatre. The museum describes the image as a gouache from this experimental period.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting Fanstyg by John Bauer from 1915. On a gray background that darkens at the top are lots of small figures; blue, green and pink nude people; fish and shellfish.

The painting is typical of the monumental art that Bauer focused on between 1915-1918 when he resigned as illustrator for Among Elves and Trolls and wanted to do something new than his classic fairy tale motifs.

John Bauer has had a major impact on Nordic folklore and storytelling and is one of Sweden's most popular artists of all time.
