Three years before the breakthrough
John Bauer’s image for Gustaf Fröding’s poem appeared in 1904 in the Christmas annual Snöflingan. That was three years before he began his celebrated work on Bland tomtar och troll. The mountain troll therefore shows Bauer just before the commission that would make his fairy-tale world so strongly associated with Swedish trolls and princesses.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the painting An Old Mountain Goblin by John Bauer from 1904. A trole from the mountains with long dark hair standing on a forested mountain. On the arms hang bangles as well as a knife, fork and a spoon. The painting was one iillustration to Gustaf Fröding's poem An old mountain troll i The Snowflake: the children's Christmas magazine.

John Bauer is known for his fairytale motifs with goblins and princesses and he has had a great influence on Nordic folklore and storytelling.
