The Emperor as Spoils of War
In 1648, during the final phase of the Thirty Years’ War, the painting was taken from Prague to Sweden as spoils of war after the Swedish attack on the Lesser Town. By then, it had remained in Rudolf II’s collection since his death and was recorded in the imperial inventories of 1621 and 1635.

The story behind the motif

Poster with the very famous painting Vertumnus from 1591. The artist behind the work was named Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

Vertumnus was the Roman god of the seasons. Arcimboldo painted Vertumnus as a portrait and tribute to the Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. The highly colorful work shows the god and emperor composed of various fruits, vegetables and flowers - a symbol of the opulence of the golden age that was believed to have returned after the emperor took office.

Giuseppe Arcimboldo was an Italian artist and belonged to an illegitimate branch of a noble family. He is best known for his portraits that depict the four seasons as human figures. Vertumnus is one of his most famous works.

Black collection are selected motifs where we replaced the white passepartout with a black one to highlight the motif in a modern and unique way.

Artist: Giuseppe Arcimboldo | Created: 1591.

Frame not included.

This image comes with built-in passepartout (black border). Please note that the images are cropped slightly differently depending on the size you choose. Read more about image and image quality here: FAQ .
