The story behind the motif
Poster with the world-famous motif The Starry Night from 1889 by the impressionist artist Vincent van Gogh. The motif represents the view from van Gogh's window in the mental hospital where he was admitted after injuring himself the year before.
The hospital was located in Provence and the painting represents the view just before sunrise combined with a made-up fantasy town.
Van Gogh came to paint several of his most famous works during his time in the hospital.
