Created During the Years of Illness
By 1938, Paul Klee was severely affected by scleroderma, a disease that had limited his mobility and changed the way he worked in his later years. Even so, an intense period of creativity followed: Forest Witches is among the works from these final years that the Fondation Beyeler highlights as typical of Klee’s late production.

The story behind the motif

Canvas with the painting Forest Witches (Wald-Hexen) by the very famous Swiss German artist Paul Klee.

This dramatic, abstract painting from 1938 after the war is probably one of the most stunning of his later career. The thick, black lines on a background of somber olive green and vivid red and orange intersect, gradually revealing the image of two forest witches. This combination of sad and strong colors is typical of much of Paul Klee's work.

If you order from Norway, your order will be delivered with Fedex; to Sweden and the rest of the world with DHL. Your package is normally delivered to your nearest pickup point!
